Geotab GoFocus Onboarding Status

Geotab GoFocus Onboarding Status

Overview

When installing or resetting a camera in MyGeotab, you may see its connectivity status listed as Onboarding. This is a standard initialization phase, but if a camera becomes stuck in this state, action is required to bring it Online.

This article explains what the "Onboarding" status means, the criteria required to complete it, and how to troubleshoot cameras that fail to progress.

MyGeotab Camera Connectivity Statuses

To provide context, here is the full list of camera statuses you will see in MyGeotab:

StatusMeaning
OnboardingCamera is in the initial setup/initialization phase after being paired.
OnlineCamera is actively connected and operating normally.
OfflineCamera is not currently reporting to MyGeotab.
StandbyCamera is in a low-power state (vehicle is parked or ignition is off).
Not AvailableCamera cannot be reached, or there is no recent data.

Prerequisites for Onboarding Completion

For a camera to successfully move from Onboarding to Online, the system must meet all five of the following conditions:

  1. Active GO Device Communication: The camera pairs directly through the GO device (GO9 or newer). If the GO device is not actively communicating with MyGeotab, onboarding cannot progress.

  2. Proper Power & Connection: The camera must be powered and securely connected via the Smart Cable (IOX connection).

  3. Current Firmware: The camera automatically checks for firmware updates on every boot. If an update is required, it downloads the file and applies it during the next boot-down cycle (ignition-off event). Onboarding will not complete until the firmware is fully updated.

  4. Accelerometer & GPS Calibration: The camera relies on real-time calibration, which requires 1 to 2 actual trips to complete. Poor GPS signal quality will delay this process.

    • Notes
Note: During these first two trips, the device will run in Troubleshooting Beeping Mode to assist installers with verification.

  5. Auto-Pairing Confirmation: The GO Focus Plus is self-calibrating and auto-pairs with the GO device without manual configuration. However, the backend system must confirm this pairing before exiting the onboarding phase.

Troubleshooting a Stuck "Onboarding" Status

If a camera remains stuck in the Onboarding phase for more than two trips, follow these troubleshooting steps in order:

  • Verify GO Device Health: Check MyGeotab to ensure the main GO device is communicating normally (verify its last trip and last contact time).

  • Inspect Hardware Connections: Ensure the Smart Cable is completely and securely seated. Loose IOX connections are the most common cause of onboarding failures.

  • Check GO Device Firmware: Ensure the GO device itself is on the latest firmware version, as camera firmware updates depend on this.

  • Confirm Vehicle Movement: Verify that the vehicle has completed at least 1–2 actual trips with movement, not just stationary ignition cycles.

  • Assess GPS Environment: Ensure the vehicle is not parked inside a garage, tunnel, or dense urban area with poor GPS signal, which stalls calibration.

  • Perform a Soft Reset: If the status remains stuck after checking the steps above, manually unpair and re-pair the camera within MyGeotab, then cycle the vehicle ignition to restart the process.
